Вольтерра
Volterra (Velathri) was one of the most important cities of the Etruscan Dodecapolis and to this period one can date the impressive walls enclosing the town. During the Middle Ages, the city of Volterra flourished under the rule of the bishops which managed to keep the city independent from the other Tuscan powers. In the 14th century, however, the expansionism of Florence got the upper hand over the city which was then forced (not without riots and protests) to bow to the new ruler. From that moment onward, the city remained under the influence of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.
